Outdoor Living: Extend the Season

One of our greatest joys in what we do is seeing the incredible effect an outdoor living space can have on a family. More time together; cooking, eating, sharing.

“Short and sweet” is a saying that is certainly descriptive of summers here in Michigan. Between the bookends of Memorial and Labor Day, it is too often a blur of baseball games and barbeques, always seeming too short as it comes to a close. Outdoor living doesn’t have to end in September. By focusing on a landscape design that accommodates all our seasons, not just those short summer months, we will extend the season and get you and your family out-of-doors no matter the temperatures.

The backyard pictured here was designed by our senior designer Lynn Cavanaugh, and features a hot tub and gas fire pit that can be used year round.

Roasting marshmallows in the snow extends the season for sure!

If you aren’t inclined to install larger elements, try using accessories to warm up the area as the temps cool. One of the first things I recommend adding, if you don’t already have one, is an area rug. Indoor-outdoor textiles have taken a giant leap forward in terms of quality and style. A rug can add eye-pleasing color and cushioning insulation under your feet for comfort.

Placed under seating and dining groups, an outdoor rug makes those areas even cozier. It offers a place for kids to play and pets to curl up, keeping the family close and interactive. Keeping blankets, lap shawls, or throws on hand invites people to linger longer even when a chill is in the air.

An outdoor living area is one of the best places to be most any time of year.

Extend your outdoor living season.

With the right planning, it can make the most of your investment and you’ll find yourself spending more time outside and feeling good about it.
